Big Data for Better Planning Seminar

You are cordially invited to a Seminar jointly co-organized by The Centre for Transportation Research (CTR) and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering


Harnessing big data can provide useful information for better analysis. With this information, planners and decision makers can make better decisions relating to planning, investing, designing, constructing and management of transportation systems. This presentation will focus on the big data applications in accessibility analysis, public transport planning and operations and site selections for services and businesses. Both the frameworks of data fusion and actual applications will be presented. In this seminar, an overview is given of weaknesses in traditional/current travel demand forecasting. Then, insights are provided about new data sources such as GIS, public transport, mobile phones, etc. Finally, new opportunities for travel forecasts by integrating big data, better mobility-analytic tools and tailored indictors will be introduced.


Speaker Biography
Mr. Cheng currently holds a position as regional director – Asia in Citilabs Inc. which is a global provider of mobility analytic systems for businesses and government agencies. He has 30 year of experience in transportation planning and traffic engineering specializing in travel demand forecasting for passenger and freight systems. His professional experience ranges from technical modeling to project management in both public agencies and private consulting firms. In addition, He formally served as Transportation Planning Manager for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority; Director of Wilbur Smith Associates Limited in Hong Kong; Principal Associate for Wilbur Smith in the United States; Assistant Transportation Engineer for the City of Upland, California and as an Assistant Transportation Planner for Nashua Regional Planning Commission. He holds a Master of Science in Transportation/Mobility Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Master of Science in Transportation and Highway Engineering from the Ohio State University, and a Bachelor’s degree from National Chiao-Tung University in Taiwan.
